ENISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems
Confirms that an organisation identifies the environmental impact of its activities, complies with the law, and reduces that impact over time.
What this certification proves
ISO 14001 does not certify that your business is environmentally clean. It certifies that you know which of your activities affect the environment, know which laws apply to them, and are reducing that effect on purpose rather than by accident.
The centre of the standard is the environmental aspects register — a list of every activity that touches air, water, soil, waste or energy, with the significant ones singled out for control. An audit checks whether that register is complete and current, and whether your legal register matches the permits you actually hold.

E EnvironmentalMaps directly onto the E (Environmental) pillar. It is the management-system evidence behind almost every environmental disclosure.
- GRI 301–306 (materials, energy, water, biodiversity, emissions, waste) — the aspects register is the source data for these disclosures
- Korea's K-ESG guideline, E domain — asks for an environmental management system, legal compliance and reduction targets
- Supply-chain due diligence — large buyers increasingly require an environmental management system from their suppliers
- CSRD / ESRS E1–E5 (EU) — organisations reporting under European rules need exactly this kind of structured environmental data
- For energy and greenhouse gas figures specifically, ISO 50001 gives the measurement depth that 14001 alone does not

- Is there an environmental aspects register covering every activity, product and service?
- Is there a legal register, and does it match the permits you actually hold?
- Are waste, wastewater and emissions measured and recorded as the law requires?
- Have you set environmental objectives with owners and deadlines?
- Is there an emergency plan (spill, fire, leak), and have you drilled it?
- Have you evaluated legal compliance and kept the record?
- Have you carried out at least one internal audit yourselves? (required before the audit)
- Have you held a management review and kept the minutes?
