ENISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems
Confirms that an organisation identifies hazards in advance and manages them, so that people are not injured or made ill by their work.
What this certification proves
ISO 45001 does not certify that no one will be hurt. It certifies that hazards are found and dealt with before an accident, not investigated after one.
Two things set it apart from other management standards. The first is hazard identification and risk assessment — every task is examined for what could injure someone, and the controls follow a fixed order of preference: eliminate the hazard, then substitute, then engineer it out, then administrative controls, and only last personal protective equipment. Handing out gloves is the weakest answer, not the first one.
The second is worker participation. This is the only management-system standard that requires the people doing the work — not only managers — to take part in identifying hazards and deciding controls. An audit will ask to see how that participation happened.

How the requirements are structured
This is the overall shape of what the standard asks for. Working through it in this order is a sensible way to prepare.

- Is there a hazard identification and risk assessment covering every task and location?
- Do the controls follow the hierarchy — eliminate first, PPE last?
- 🔴 Is there evidence that workers took part? Minutes, safety committee records, sign-off sheets. Auditors look for this first
- Is there a legal register for health and safety obligations?
- Are contractors and visitors covered by your controls?
- Is there an emergency plan, and have you drilled it?
- Are incidents and near-misses recorded and investigated for root cause?
- Have you carried out at least one internal audit yourselves? (required before the audit)
